Patrick Joosten
Patrick, you've created a distinctive style as a largely self-taught artist. Could you describe the moment or experience that crystallized your personal artistic direction? How did it influence the evolution of your technique?
Inspiration comes mainly from the spectacle of nature, from capturing light, colors, shapes and the emotion that emerges from them to translate them energetically into abstract art. My technique is resolutely evolving in a better mastery of the mixing and associations of colors and the harmony of shapes.
In abstract art, the process can be as significant as the final piece itself. Can you walk us through your typical creative process from conception to completion? How do you decide when a piece is finished?
It is obvious that the design process is very important, I always start with a dominant color base to associate complementary colors which by fusion will create subtle color palettes. The look and observation is important to define when the work is finally completed by offering a feeling of satisfaction on an artistic work that deserves to be presented to the Public.
Your work is known for evoking deep emotional responses. What do you hope to communicate through your art, and how do you weave your intellectual and emotional goals into your pieces?
I hope viewers will feel attraction and emotion at first sight. Then, to immerse yourself in the canvas and interpret the work through the power and energy of the colors, the movement of shapes and brush strokes until the viewer appropriates the canvas.
You've mentioned that both the human form and nature significantly influence your work. Can you elaborate on how these elements manifest in your paintings? Do you see them as intertwined themes, or do they stimulate different aspects of your creativity?
It is certain that the magnificent colors of nature are a real source of inspiration for a transposition into abstract art. Regarding bodies, I remain more in a figurative abstraction with my “Body” series.
Given your reputation for experimenting with different styles and techniques, could you share one of the most unconventional methods you've used in your work? What did it teach you about artistic expression?
I made different tools to achieve desired results such as large scrapers ranging from 60 cm to 200 cm as well as certain brushes that I reworked by surface cutting work. These tools in addition to the more conventional ones allow me, depending on the desired effects, to obtain the expected result. The drying times between the different layers and the use of different mediums are also important elements in the result of the composition.
Having received numerous prestigious awards recently, how do these accolades affect your approach to art? Do they validate your artistic choices, or do they add pressure to conform to a particular artistic expression?
In fact I consider the rewards obtained as a curator as an accomplishment which strengthens my confidence in my work and which stimulates me in the different directions that I exploit and in this sense yes, indeed it validates my artistic choices.
How do you define the essence of abstract art in the context of the modern art scene? What makes abstract art relevant and potent in today's cultural landscape?
Abstract art, in essence, is a powerful artistic expression that does not depict reality but focuses on the use of shape, color and texture to convey emotions, ideas or concepts.
In the context of the modern art scene, abstract art remains relevant and powerful for many reasons:
Abstract art encourages viewers to actively engage with the artwork by interpreting it in their own way and transcends language and cultural barriers, reaching out to people from different backgrounds and worlds.
Abstract art has always been at the forefront of artistic innovation and experimentation. In today's art landscape, abstract artists continue to push boundaries, adopting new technologies to create innovative works of art.
What role does the viewer play in your art? Considering the subjective nature of abstract art, how do you feel about different interpretations of your work?
As an abstract artist, the viewer plays a crucial role in the interpretation and experience of my artistic work by inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the artwork and contribute their own perspectives and interpretations.
I consider the subjective nature of abstract art to be one of its greatest strengths. Rather than imposing a singular meaning or message, abstract art allows for a multiplicity of interpretations.
The interest of abstract art lies in its capacity to promote links between the artist and the spectator, pushing him to his own subjective interpretation. Abstract art transcends boundaries and invites individuals to explore the infinite depths of their imagination.
Where do you see the future of abstract art heading, especially considering the rapid changes in technology and society? How do you stay ahead in an ever-evolving field?
The future of abstract art is deeply intertwined with rapid changes in technology and society, presenting both challenges and opportunities for artists to explore new frontiers of creativity and expression. With the evolution of technology, abstract artists are increasingly integrating digital tools and techniques into their practice. thus offering exciting possibilities for pushing the boundaries of abstraction.
By embracing change and innovation while remaining true to their artistic vision, abstract artists can continue to shape the future of abstraction and make their contributions to the artistic landscape.
Looking back at your artistic journey, what are you most proud of? And looking forward, what do you hope your legacy will be within the art world?
Looking back on my artistic journey, what I am most proud of is the evolution of my artistic voice and the growth of my work over time. Each work represents a step forward in my exploration of abstraction, a journey in which experimentation and creativity are the key words.
I humbly hope that the artistic legacy that will remain behind me will allow many Amateurs and Collectors to appreciate and contemplate on a daily basis the work they have chosen.
