Could you tell us about yourself and your background?
I am a contemporary abstract artist based in London, UK. I specialize in Goniochromatic Abstract art, which utilizes colours to create optical effects in my artwork. I also work with metallic overlays on glass surfaces, as well as mixed media assemblages and sculptures incorporating various materials like glass, resin, and more.
I study MA Fine Art at a prestigious London University and hold a BA in Modelmaking from the Arts University Bournemouth, which I completed in 2008. My works have been exhibited in various exhibitions and shows, including group exhibitions, curated exhibitions, and competitions. I have worked with several galleries and I have been showcasing my work to a wider audience presented around the globe, including in Miami, Taipei, Innsbruck, and London.
When did you decide to pursue a career as an artist?
Art has been intertwined with my life since its very inception – a journey that began as I took my first breath. Even during those early days, I transformed bare walls into vibrant canvases, adorning them with the whimsical scribbles of a young dreamer, much to my mother's amusement.
As time flowed by, a transformation occurred within me. The lines, curves, and shadows in my drawings began to unveil my fascination with the interplay of light and shadow. It was during these moments that I felt a pull to delve into the realm of art, to comprehend how the spectrum of light could infuse vitality into my creations.
What does your artwork aim to say?
As an artist, I have always strived to create work that is both meaningful and impactful. Through my art, I aim to explore the perfect blend of creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship.
As for my artistic intentions, my artwork aims to showcase the elegance of geometry and mathematics, vivid iridescent colours and logarithmic patterns inspired by symmetry and compositions. I draw inspiration from natural elements such as refractions, reflections, and fractals, which contribute to my unique contemporary designs. My use of holographic and metallic materials creates mesmerizing and dimensional effects, especially when exposed to direct or indirect lighting conditions. Through my art, I aim to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field of Goniochromatic art, creating works of art that are both visually impactful and conceptually engaging.
How do you stay motivated and productive in your art practice?
I stay motivated and productive through various means. This can include setting goals, establishing routines, seeking inspiration from other artists and sources, experimenting with new techniques, and continually challenging myself creatively. I participate in group exhibitions, solo exhibitions, curated exhibitions, and took part in competitions. I have a studio in Kingston where I can make a mess and explore glass shards. I spend countless hours in my studio, experimenting with different materials and techniques. I open my studio to the public once a year when everyone can come in and peek behind the scene of Mefio art.
How has your artistic career progressed and changed over time?
From a young age, I was captivated by the art of craftsmanship. After graduating with a BA in Modelmaking from the prestigious Arts University Bournemouth in the UK in 2008, I made the conscious decision to embark on a career in the world of retail and ecommerce. Along the way, I discovered new ways to explore craftsmanship and glassware, which eventually led me to begin working under the name Mefio in 2019. Since then, my passion for artistic expression has flourished, driving me to continuously explore the vast and dynamic realms of creative possibility.
Throughout my artistic journey, I have honed my skills, mastering a diverse range of techniques and construction methodologies. This meticulous approach has allowed me to experiment with an array of materials, including metals, resins, ceramics, and even cutting-edge computer-generated artwork.
Who are your biggest influences?
On my artistic voyage, Salvador Dali played a pivotal role, guiding me along my trajectory. His surrealism fascinated me with its knack for delving into the enigmatic and unforeseen. As I delved further, I encountered the enthralling abstract glass art by Jiri Liska and the extraordinary creations of Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian. Their artistic prowess has intricately woven its impact into my own journey of creative exploration.
How do you stay motivated and productive in your art practice?
I maintain my motivation and productivity through diverse strategies. These encompass goal-setting, establishing structured routines, drawing inspiration from fellow artists and various sources, embracing novel techniques, and consistently pushing my creative boundaries. I actively engage in group exhibitions, curated showcases, solo displays, and competitions.
My Kingston studio serves as my creative haven, allowing me to freely explore glass fragments and delve into experimentation. Countless hours are invested in my studio, dedicated to experimenting with varied materials and techniques. Annually, I open the doors to the public, inviting them to glimpse behind the scenes of Mefio art, offering a rare opportunity to witness my creative process firsthand.
Which elements are essential to an artist’s work?
The essential elements in an artist's work can differ based on their individual style and goals. However, in my art, elements such as technique, composition, subject matter, expression, and creativity hold great significance. Additionally, I incorporate geometry and goniochromatic effects, which are integral to my artistic vision. A key aspect that sets my art apart is my bespoke technique of metallic film overlay. This technique involves a skillful combination of gilding, decals, foiling, and precise application of glazes. The result is a unique fusion of techniques that contributes to the distinctiveness of Mefio's art.
Which function does the artist fulfill in society?
Within society, artists serve diverse roles. They possess the capacity to incite contemplation, question prevailing norms, convey sentiments, mirror cultural and historical backgrounds, and offer sensory aesthetics. Artists possess the power to elicit emotions, ignite conversations, and enrich the cultural and intellectual tapestry of their communities.
Personally, I strive to challenge artistic conventions, convey emotions, document historical narratives, inspire fellow creators, and offer sensory aesthetics. My creative pursuits center on delivering visual aesthetics that evoke emotions and encourage contemplation about human perception. I specialize in crafting radiant visual displays that dance within the spectrum of light.
What do you want your artwork to stand for?
By channeling my artistic focus into geometric Goniochromatic Abstractionism, I bring forth vibrant artworks that revolve around the graceful allure of geometry. These creations serve as a canvas where vivid iridescent colors and enchanting patterns intertwine harmoniously, acting as conduits for the expression of emotions through the varying frequencies of the color spectrum.
What are your long-term goals for your career?
Looking ahead, my long-term goal encompasses a multifaceted expansion of my artistic practice. I aspire to not only continue creating art but also to immerse myself in the global art scene.
