Benjamin Moravec

BENJAMIN MORAVEC (°1977 in Tiais, France) is an artist who maintains a firm belief in the meaning of painting, even in a world that is inundated by a constantly changing mass of imagery. Using painterly means, which, incidentally, he yields in a highly virtuosic manner, Moravec questions our contemporary visual culture. He uses, to this end, the picture-in-picture technique. The position of the painted image, painted in a painting, which in itself is already a representation, is a crucial question in his work. Moravec also investigates the relationships between images and the public versus private nature of their mediatisation, whether those images originate from the world of painting, photography, advertising, cinema or the internet. Benjamin Moravec is an artist who deals with the contemporary dimensions of (the) art (of painting) in a very sensitive, intelligent and professional manner.

Could you tell us a little more about your background and how you began creating art?

I am a French born painter, lives and works in Nürnberg (Germany). I had always draw and paint since my childhood. My parents was both scientist but music and art was really important for them. I was a teenager when I realized that I wanted to devote my life to art. I start to studies in the Applied art school and Fine art school in Lyon and I become anscholarship for three month at the Fine art school in Nürnberg. I live there since 20 years now.

What does your art aim to say to its viewers?

Painting is for me like music, an emotional and sensual language. It ́s not about to say something but more to let feel . First when I succeed to create an emotional connection with the viewers is it possible to open to a reflection. In my painting it ́s all about identity. The relationship we build with the images is a really important aspect of my work: How images forms us und how we try to definite our self trough them.

Can you tell us about the process of creating your work? What is your daily routine when
working?

First I work on the motif and composition with a 3D software. I use picture that I find on Internet as textures and create light situations with a rendering software. Works with computer software allows me to produce quickly a kind of "studies" that I use for paint. My days are organized like this: morning computer work, afternoon painting.

What is the essential element in your art?

The recurring element is the principle of "mise en abime" :the picture in the picture”.
Nothing is real, everything is self-image.

In your opinion, what role does the artist have in society?

Reality does not exist if you don ́t look at her. The role of an artist is to look. Therefore without art, the reality does not exist anymore and the society disappear with her.
